The Helm Method of drumming is a system of development whereby the student progresses in gradual steps toward developing balanced musicianship. Each step builds upon the previous learning, combining best practices from numerous sources. A student-centered approach, the Helm Method adapts the speed of progress to the needs of the individual. The term “Rudimental Drumming” refers to a general approach to drumming whereby sticking patterns are arranged in relatively small groupings called “rudiments”. Attention is given to technique development, form and virtuosity, style and artistry. With a long history, a variety of styles and approaches have developed, influencing applications from marching bands to drum set to classical drumming. The Helm Method utilizes a variety of rudimental approaches presented in a progressive manner, allowing new material to be built upon prior learning. Likewise, it provides the structure of a tried and true approach with the flexibility for those desiring to boost their creativity.
